  • Update from the Education Minister

Tue 24 Mar 2020 Mr Voros

Please find the following shared by the LA and WG:

Following the announcement tonight of further big changes aimed at slowing the spread of coronavirus, the Minister for Education has issued the following statement saying that schools and childcare are still open for the children of critical workers, and thanking teaching and childcare professionals for their dedication in this hour of national need.

Statement by Kirsty Williams, Minister for Education

I’d like to thank parents for listening to the advice and keeping most children at home. I’d be grateful if tomorrow morning you only use schools or childcare as a last resort.

The advice has not changed as a result of tonight’s decision to further restrict movement, which our First Minister, along with other UK leaders took with the sole aim of slowing the spread of coronavirus.

Children should be at home wherever possible, critical workers will still need to have safe care arrangements for their children.  Our schools and childcare settings are providing a vital service to support critical workers and our most vulnerable children.

Those involved in the current arrangements looking after children should continue. Many thanks to our amazing teaching and childcare professionals for their commitment in this time of national need.

This situation will continue for the immediate term but we will be reviewing with healthcare professionals, local authorities and our teaching unions.

  • Latest Updates

Mon 23 Mar 2020 Mr Voros

    Good morning all,

We write today with a quick update following the very quick decisions that had to be made around the opening of the school last week by the Welsh Government, Local Authority and School.

We have provided home learning packs for all learners who were in school on Thursday or Friday of last week. There are packs available for your child if they did not receive one. Just contact the school and we can arrange a time and way of safely collecting resources. This work should provide a number of weeks of activities to be completed.

They do not all require masses of resources, or use of ICT, and should allow children to complete some tasks whilst many parents will be home working, or doing other things to encourage learning at home - exercise, mindfulness and play are vital things to carry on with at home during this difficult time.  The school is not expecting full days of timetable for learning, and the focus must be on keeping families safe and well.

Over the next two weeks, the school will be making arrangements for longer-term distance learning. We understand that not all families will have access to online resources, and it is vital that we understand how many families might not be able to access work in this way. We will make contact with as many families as possible to find the best way of organising this work. This is likely to be a mix of paper-based and online work, with support materials and discussion being delivered through the Hwb. If you do not have your child's username, we would urge you to contact the school later this week.

At this immediate point, the focus has to be on keeping well and keeping frontline staff in their roles. As we develop a plan, we will be in touch.

We would like to take this opportunity again to thank our wonderful pupils and parents for their relationships and interactions with the school this academic year. We hope that you are all able to adopt the Government's advice fully during this troubling time. As mentioned on previous letters, you can contact the school using the emergency email address, or contact the school via the usual admin address and phone number. We want to be on hand for discussion in the normal ways and to continue to support our wonderful families.
