  • Mrs Davies's Blog Autumn Term 8

    Fri 27 Oct 2017 Mrs D Davies

How quickly this half term has passed and how much work has been done in just 8 weeks.

We have been working hard on our Post Inspection Action Plan and many of you have commented upon some of the many initiatives we have introduced. A big thank you to all parents / families who have spent time in school whether joining us for a community assembly or for our Reading workshops which have proven to be so very popular. It has been good having so many of you spending time in school.

Thank you also for helping the children with their weekly spelling lists, your hard work at home is really making a difference. Next half term we aim to focus on working with parents to support their children in achieving well in National Tests - we know that some of you are very interested in this.

We have had many highlights this half term with so many young people doing so well - generally, our children have settled exceptionally well into their new classes and the level of their engagement in all year groups is super.

Well done this half term to all our democratically appointed pupil leaders and especially to our new Head Boy and Girl.

This week - a big well done to Year 4 for leading our Harvest celebrations today and also to Caden F who secured 1st position in the  Oakwood Cross Country event.

Take Care this half term everyone and children, please be careful when you are out and about  - have a great holiday !!

  • Mrs D Davies Blog Autumn Term 7

    Fri 20 Oct 2017 Mrs D Davies

This week has been different in many ways . The week began with storms and schools across the County closing due to the bad weather.  We always aim to keep our school open if we can and will always keep our parents updated via text and website - Monday was such an example. PCC decided to close all remaining schools by 1.30 ish and some parents had notification before the school via PCC Twitter/ Facebook. I can only thank our parents for waiting so patiently whilst we dismissed our children as safely as possible from the school hall.

On Tuesday there were many late arrivals at school due to the traffic congestion in Haverfordwest, Wednesday saw the Cross Country tournament being postponed due to poor weather and yesterday around 300 children received their flu vaccination. Today, the children have been FANTASTIC     - the day started at 9.00 with a fire drill and evacuation drill, the latter involving walking the children onto STP site. They returned within 25 minutes and then enjoyed a whole school community assembly led by 4H. The message of the assembly was clear and put across in a very child friendly manner, reminding us all that we may look different but we are all the same inside.. Rainbow People in a Rainbow School !!

In the afternoon, we all began with a five minute rehearsal of a school lockdown security drill , some of our parents looked at school performance data and Year 2 had an open afternoon for parents.

It has certainly been a varied week.

Next week will be the final week in school before half term , parents have the opportunity to join us during one of our parents ' evenings  and we shall be treating the children to a  disco after school on Thursday Evening .

Have a good weekend everyone - please be e safe and be mindful when your children re using mobiles, particularly with anonymous apps.

    Mon 16 Oct 2017 Mrs D Davies

Due to the severe winds and advice from PCC, school is now closed. Thank you to those parents who safely collected children from the one exit point and if you haven't yet collected your child, please do not worry - they will be kept safe until you arrive.

School is monitoring the weather very carefully today. Children (from morning break onwards) will be kept indoors.

We shall cancel Pyramid and Hangar 5 clubs after school this evening in order to ensure all our families get home in good time.

We shall contact you if the situation changes.

  • Mrs Davies's Blog Autumn Term 6

    Fri 13 Oct 2017 Mrs D Davies

It is the end of week 6 and how quickly this term is passing.

It has been a very busy week here at school and there are many good things to share.

As part of their work on Muck, Mess and Mixtures, Year 2 have visited the Shakey Shack in Haverfordwest. We would like to thank the owners for closing the shop so that our children could enjoy their time enjoying their chosen milkshake with staff and for answering such tricky questions that were set by our young leaners  eg how much profit do you make in a week ?! In addition to the super behaviour exhibited by the children at " The Shack ", we must congratulate them on the way that they walked so smartly and safely into town and back - many visitors have commented on this already ! Well done Year 2 , good work and good Kerbcraft skills !

It was World Mental Health Awareness Day on Tuesday and Mrs Picton Jones spoke to staff and interested parents regarding her own personal experiences of living with those with mental health issues and about the campaigning she has done to make others aware of the often devastating affects of poor mental health. She is an inspiration to us all . Later that day, she took part in Pembrokeshire County Council's events at County Hall.

I thank the parents who attended Wednesday's induction evening, it was good to see you at school.

Today, the school enjoyed working with many parents who took part in our Paired Reading workshops   - it was great to see our young people working alongside parents and grandparents.  Thank you also to 6R for leading our Family Community assembly and to all the families who joined us for Go Green Day today.

    Have a great weekend.

Such a difficult decision to make! Congratulations to Max and Lola, our new Head Boy and Head Girl!!

Congratulations also to Luke and Livvy who showed such maturity as part of our interviewing panel. I look forward to working with you all.

Next week will be another busy week and there are some opportunities for parents to join us. On Tuesday , during lunchtime 12:00 -1:00, Mrs Picton Jones will be talking to interested staff and parents about Mental Health Awareness as part of Mental Health day. If you would like to join us, please let us know, we would love for you to come along.

On Wednesday between 3.30 and 5.00, parents can come and meet the teachers and walk around the school and later 5:00 - 5:45, myself, Senior Staff and Governors will speak to parents about how the school is performing and how it will address Estyn's recommendations.

There will be two Paired Reading workshops on Friday - at 9.00 and repeated at 1.30, we hope that you will join us to find out more about how this strategy can help you with reading at home. Our previous reading workshops were very well attended and a good number of parents requested this training - please let us know if you are attending. We hope that you will have the opportunity to read with your child at school, practising this technique on the day.

We look forward to the next school week ahead - have a good weekend.
